In 2017, I started The Informed Parents of Austin. We’re a group of over a thousand local parents and community members who advocate for inclusion and equity policies for LGBTQ students in the Austin Independent School District.
We’ve discovered that one of the best ways to help support LGBTQ students and families is by supporting comprehensive, inclusive sex-ed in schools. We have been working hard to support our district’s revised human sexuality curriculum as well as support new bills which would create state laws designed to inform and protect all children.
The fight never ends as there are many people, with connections in high places, who insist that teaching kids to accept and welcome LGBTQ classmates is “indoctrinating them into the LGBTQ lifestyle” and that sex-ed is a “master plan by Planned Parenthood to make kids sexually active so they can sell abortions to them.”
Do you know what the inclusion and sex ed policies are at your kids’ school? Here’s a handy toolkit to ask the questions you need to know.
If you live in Texas and would like to be kept informed about how you can help support LGBTQ students in Austin, or your city, please join us at our private Facebook Group.
If you live outside of Texas, you’ll probably prefer our Facebook Page, which has more general LGBTQ support information. You can also message me there to learn how you can start your own Informed Group in your school district.
And of course you can visit our website at InformedParentsOfAustin.com
