My first profile pic from October 2007 - back when My first profile pic from October 2007 - back when I thought George Bush was the lowest we could go as a country and this platform’s dark side was limited to the fact it was designed as a place to judge the “faces” of female college students. In the early years, I loved how this was a place to get to know the “kids” from high school that I should have spent more time getting to know while IN high school. It eventually became special haven for meeting other introvert, funny mom bloggers who became some of my dearest friends, even though I only saw them once a year at writing conferences. The Groups are where I have accumulated a good share of my furniture, kids’ toys, and knowledge about the goodness (and sometimes ugliness) of my neighbors. One of those Groups, Informed Parents of Austin, is where I’ve met some of the best humans, in an effort to create a safe space to share information and support LGBTQIA+ students. Ironically, that group is now housed under the roof of a corporation that has put specific practices in place that harm the LGBTQIA+ community. People will die due to the lack of facts here. Like many others, I’m going to be taking a break from here for a bit. Because of politics? Yes. Because if I spend hours trying to find a gutter and window cleaning service that supports women and the LGBTQIA community then I should probably be as thoughtful about companies that I share all of my digital behavior data with? Yes. Because a product with algorithms specifically built to addict and harm the human brain should probably be used in moderation and with some guardrails? Yes. Like many others, I will likely be getting some social fixes during my detox over at Blue sky: susannekerns. I’m pretty confident I will succumb to habit and temptation when I have to meander over here for work (yet another tangled web of the socials for those of us who rely on it for income). So if you see me heart one of your posts, know that I’m doing it under protest of this place with the hope we’ll have a safer place to connect soon.
